Abstract The principal factors influencing the extent of damage caused by the anthomyiid Delia coarctata to cereals and possibilities for forecasting this pest are described. The use of several insecticides as seed, pre-emergence, autumnal postemergence or spring postemergence treatments for the control of D. coarctata was studied in the field in Belgium in autumn 1986 and spring 1987 on wheat which followed a beet crop. Seed treatment was considered to be most suitable for the control of this pest.
