Abstract In this first part of a series on the insect fauna of apple orchards in Belgium, the possible effect of insecticides applied against apple pests (either alone or as part of an integrated control programme) on non-target Psocoptera in the orchards was investigated, by means of Malaise traps and yellow pan traps placed in sections of the orchard that had received chemical, integrated or no treatment. The pan traps caught a greater number of species (10 in 9 weeks) and the Malaise traps a greater number of individuals. The part of the orchard that had received integrated control was influenced by adjacent forest, and Malaise traps placed there showed a greater diversity of species than did either the chemically treated or the untreated sections; pan traps showed no significant difference between catches in the 3 sections.
