Abstract A European project for improvement of disease resistance in apples is described. Varietal resistance is considered to be a key element in integrated management of orchards. Genetic durability of resistance to scab (Venturia inaequalis) and rust (Podosphaera leucotricha) is discussed. The elements of the DARE (Durable Apple Resistance in Europe) project are listed. These are: the characterization of new sources of durable resistance; study of variability of the pathogens; study of the genetic basis of resistance to these pathogens; development and utilization of new selection strategies; and marketing and consumer testing.
