Abstract A new method of estimating the infectivity of Erynia neoaphidis to alates and apterae of Acyrthosiphon pisum is described, with a view to the possible use of this fungus for biological control of the aphid. The maximum likelihood probit analysis on 33 assays indicates significant regressions between the logarithm of the dose used and the probit mortality for all assays. The LC50s averaged 0.78 conidia/mm2 for alates and 1.3/mm2 for apterae, and the weighted mean slopes were similar for the 2 aphid types. The variability between assays was greater for apterae than for alates, which are therefore more suitable for use in bioassays. The number of replicated tests was found to have more influence than the number of doses of fungus tested or the number of aphids tested with each dose. However, results obtained with this method were sufficiently variable to make it difficult to use to detect significant differences between 2 assays for which the ratio of the LC50s is less than 2.
