| Abstract | Aphids and aphid natural enemy populations were monitored in 14 ware potato reference fields in Belgium in the summer of 2000 in the context of an advisory farmer system. Aphid populations were very low except in two fields located in the province of Hainaut at the end of the growing season. Recommendations to the farmers were that insecticide treatments were not appropriate, except for ware potatoes that must be harvested later than mid-September. These recommendations reduced the normal use of insecticides in 2000. Observations carried out in 2000 also showed the importance of biological control of potato aphids by parasitic hymenoptera. However, these beneficial arthropods are quite sensitive to pesticides. The probable impact of protection of potatoes with fungicides against late blight [Phytophthora infestans] is discussed. |
