Abstract Using diet to increase milk nutritional quality and reduce cow methane and nitrogen release Diet affects the nutritional quality and environmental impact of the milk produced by dairy cows. This study examined how diet impacted milk and waste production in cows producing 30 litres of milk per day. The control group (CTL, n=10) received a conventional diet, while the experimental group (DUR, n=10) received a more sustainable diet. The sustainable diet contained no soy and incorporated extruded linseeds (8.4% DM). The diets had the same energetic value (0.9 French feed units for lactation [UFL]/kg DM), but differed in their energy sources and crude protein content (CP; 16.4% vs. 13.5% in the control vs. sustainable diet). The cows fed the sustainable diet produced milk of greater nutritional quality (+ 34% unsaturated fatty acids, + 120% omega-3 fatty acids) and had a smaller environmental impact at the herd level (- 10% to - 20% methane emitted per day and 16% improved nitrogen efficiency). Diet did not affect milk yield, but cows given the sustainable diet produced milk with a lower fat and protein content (- 8% and -3 %, respectively).
