REOREC

REOREC Feasibility Study of Renewable Energy Options for Rural Electrification in Cambodia

Context

Currently, Cambodia uses imported fossil fuels to supply its electricity requirements coupled by minor purchases from neighbouring countries. Cambodia has the highest electricity tariffs of any ASEAN country. To attain sustainable development and alleviate the socio-economic situation, Cambodia has to tap its renewable energy resources to provide electricity for the country. The government of Cambodia envisions that by the year 2030, over 70% of this rural population will have access to grid-quality electricity.

Objectives

This project addresses the resources, financing, technology and policy bases for renewable energy implementation in Cambodia. It is expected that this project will spur interest among the major stakeholders to create suitable climate in the promotion, development and implementation of renewable energy projects in Cambodia.

Description of tasks

 Renewable energy assessment and cluster identification
 Renewable rural electrification policy and institutional studies
 Feasibility studies
 Project announcement for private sector participation

Expected results

 Increase in private sector investment
 Development in renewable energy project through rural energy enterprises Cambodia
 Improve the global as well as the national/local environment, by promoting the curbing of the uncontrolled emissions and health hazards from field burning of biomass, use of fossil fuels, and inefficient/inappropriate use of biomass energy resources in rural areas
