Abstract This paper was presented at a meeting of the IOBC/WPRS working group "Integrated control in cereal crops", held 21-22 March 1990 in Gottingen. The development of populations of aphids (mainly Metopolophium dirhodum and Sitobion avenae) and their most important natural enemies was observed in 90 winter wheat fields in Belgium in 1972-89. A method is described for deciding when aphid control is necessary, based on the effect of M. dirhodum and S. avenae on yield and on a linear multiple regression equation, forecasting aphid density from the main groups of natural enemies (parasitoids, entomogenous fungi and syrphid larvae) at the kernel formation stage.
