Abstract The aim of this study is to evaluate the influence of the particle size distributionand water content on the pelletizing energy consumption of biomasses. Four biomasses are tested: spruce, bamboo, sorghum and fescue. A model is developed which describes the influence of the type of biomass and its water content on the energy consumption of the pellet mill. All tested biomasses show a significant linear relationship to the water content with spruce having the highest energy consumption level, followed by bamboo, fescue and sorghum. The granulometry has no significant impact on the pelletizing energy for spruce and fescue.
