Abstract Integrated slug control was investigated. In addition to through the application of molluscicides, slug numbers are stated to be reduced by cultural methods based on 5 principles: by crop rotation avoiding crops favourable to slugs e.g. rape and vetch [Vicia]; by soil treatments, including clearing the soil after harvest, cultivation, compaction of coarse soils and improvement of soil structure; by improvement of growth conditions (plant fitness); by seed dressing (the antifeedant activity of 8 fungicides was demonstrated in the laboratory and field); and by selection of more resistant varieties. The biological control of slugs is also reviewed, including the use of viruses, bacteria and mites, slug eating sciomyzids, parasitic helminths, such as Mullerius capillaris, predatory beetles and other gastropods, such as Zonitoides nitidus, an egg predator of Deroceras reticulatum, the efficacy of which was assessed in laboratory experiments. Additionally vertebrate predators, amphibia, reptiles, birds and mammals were thought to be important in slug control.
