| Abstract | Circular holes at the base of the trunk of Beaucarnea recurvata imported into Belgium from Guatemala were found to have been caused by Yuccaborus frontalis. In the laboratory this species was reared from Dracaena and Yucca and its biology was observed. The adults, which were first seen in June, fed on the base of the main stem while remaining at least partly buried in the soil, and were active mainly at night. Eggs were laid in holes similar to the feeding punctures. In August, the beetles were active on the trunks and among the leaves on the shady side of the tree, which indicated a summer flight period in the field. At the beginning of September, feeding but no oviposition was observed on the leaves, and also some fighting and mating; a few days later several adults died and no further activity was seen. The yucca used for rearing was dead by the following March, and was found to contain numerous larval galleries in the tissue beneath the bark. These findings indicate that Yuccaborus frontalis, which had been thought to infest dead or dying trees and shrubs, can attack living ones in a confined indoor site such as a greenhouse. |
