Abstract Six varieties of winter wheat were studied in 1970 at Gembloux in Belgium, with reference to the vertical distribution of aphids on the tillers and to the effect of the different varieties on the numbers and species of aphids attacking them. Populations of all aphid species increased less rapidly as the plants aged. Acyrthosiphon (Metopolophium) dirhodum (Wlk.), which was the most abundant, lived on the leaves only, preferring the lower ones as long as they remained turgid. Macrosiphum (Sitobion) avenae (F.) and M. (S.) fragariae (Wlk.), which were considered together, fed on the upper leaves and green ears but multiplied rapidly only when ears were present, being ten times more numerous on ears than on leaves. Since Macrosiphum spp. attack younger organs of the plant they are likely to be more injurious (although less numerous) than A. dirhodum. Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) was also present but attacked only the two apical leaves, was less abundant than the other species and reached its peak later in the year. Some differences in varietal susceptibility of wheat to the aphids were observed, and most of those resistant to Acrythosiphon were susceptible to Macrosiphum and vice versa. Fungus diseases caused heavy aphid mortality in July, but parasitism by Hymenoptera and predation by Syrphid, Chrysopid and Coccinellid larvae remained low on all wheat varieties throughout the observation period.
