| Abstract | A sample of V. bodnantense plants, collected from Belgium, exhibiting symptoms of wilting, leaves turning from green to brown, discoloured vascular tissues and root necrosis, was submitted for laboratory diagnosis in May 2002. The sample came from a Belgian ornamental nursery that obtained stock plants from the Netherlands. Pieces of surface-disinfected necrotic root tissue were transferred to Phytophthora selective medium. Morphological and molecular analyses, and pathogenicity tests on Rhododendron catawbiense identified P. ramorum as the causal organism. This is thought to be the first record of P. ramorum from Belgium. P. ramorum has since been found in other Belgian nurseries on R. yakushimanum. |
