Abstract In this further study in Belgium of the conservation and transmission through the soil of Entomophthora spp. pathogenic to aphids [see RAE/A 67, 202], the effects on these processes of 10 fungicides applied on wet loam soil were investigated; samples of treated soil were stored for 0-20 days at 20 deg C and then sown with conidia of E. obscura, and the infectivity of the conidia and the persistence of the fungicides were tested by bioassay with Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris). Among the 5 fungicides most toxic soon after application, binapacryl persisted for 20 days, while captan, maneb, zineb and sulfur were degraded at varying rates without completely losing their toxicity after 20 days. The toxicity of quinomethionate to E. obscura was moderate at first and declined rapidly to nil after 2 weeks. The infectivity of Entomophthora conidia was almost unaffected by the action of copper oxychloride, dodine, benomyl and carbendazim.
