Abstract The effect of saddle gall midge larvae on yield, number of seeds/ear, 1000-seed weight and stem height was studied on individual plants of spring wheat cv. Jufy 1 from 2 infested fields. Infestation by these larvae caused a decrease in yield and in stem height which was proportional to the number of galls/stem. With one-stemmed plants each increase of 5 galls/stem resulted in a 10% decrease in yield/ear and a 6% reduction in stem height. With 2-stemmed plants these values were about 5 and 3%, respectively. The decrease in yield was mainly due to a reduction in number of seeds and, to a lesser extent, to a decrease in seed weight.
