Abstract | Laboratory studies were carried out in Belgium on the persistence of infectivity of conidia of Entomophthora obscura for Acyrthosiphon pisum (Harris) on the surface of soil that was unsterilised but free from infective forms of Entomophthora spp., at 20, 10 and 5 deg C. At 20 deg C, the inoculum was still active after 12 days, but the mortality of aphids under these conditions was low. At 10 deg C, infectivity remained high after 12 days of storage but subsequently diminished rapidly. The duration of infectivity of conidia was distinctly prolonged at 5 deg C, and even after 60 days, 75% mortality of aphids was observed. Complementary observations suggested that the duration of infectivity of primary conidia depended on their ability to produce secondary and tertiary conidia. |
