Abstract From a review of the literature and investigations in Belgium, it is shown that resistance to plant diseases provides the key to the integrated or organic production of apples. Fungicides are shown to predominate in both integrated and conventional apple culture in Belgium, but there are some differences in the use of plant growth regulators, herbicides, acaricides and insecticides. Special attention is paid to the control of scab (Venturia inaequalis) by monogenic, polygenic and partial resistance. Selection processes for the creation of new varieties of apples resistant to the main diseases are reviewed.
