Abstract | The development of a fruit tree depends ultimately on the activities of the apical meristems of its aboveground parts. Using the apple as an example, an account is given of the shoot meristems, the rhythm of development modulated by competition between meristems and the organs that form from them, buds and dormancy, the induction of flowering, and the integration of these activities in the whole tree. The developmental structure of a Cox's Orange Pippin tree at 4 years is illustrated diagrammatically. |
