Abstract Rhizomania is an economically important disease of sugarbeet caused by beet necrotic yellow vein virus. Within the context of a study of soils in Belgium infected by this virus, a survey was carried out to detect the virus in sugarbeet and soil samples using ELISA, RT-PCR and bait plant techniques. Sixty-nine soil samples, taken from locations determined by the global positioning system, were collected during the sugarbeet season in 2000. In 18 of those soil samples, the virus was detected using ELISA, but in a further 18, the response was ambiguous. Using the RT-PCR method, the virus was detected in 28 soil samples. With the bait plant technique, 26 soil samples were found to be infected. Beet necrotic yellow vein virus was present in all the regions in Belgium where sugarbeet is cultivated. We also tried to detect the presence of RNA-5, an RNA that amplifies the symptoms caused by the virus, in our samples, but none of them gave a positive response for this fifth RNA molecule.
