Abstract | American latent hop virus, which is transmitted in a non-persistent manner by the aphid Phorodon humuli, appears so far to be confined to hop gardens in the USA. As part of a campaign to improve the health of hops grown in Belgium and especially to protect them against this virus on new varieties imported from the USA, an antiserum has been produced and studies were made of the ultrastructure of the virus in Chenopodium quinoa, a susceptible plant artifically inoculated for the purpose, in order to facilitate rapid identification on hops if the disease appears in Belgium or other European countries. Virus particles occurring singly or in bundles in the cytoplasm were observed by TEM in leaf tissues showing systemic symptoms 4 weeks after infection. No other type of inclusion was observed. These observations confirmed the carlavirus nature of AHLV. |
