Abstract A collection of old fruit tree cultivars was established in 1975 and currently maintains 1150 apple, 850 pear and 310 plum accessions. The material is subjected to continuous evaluation for disease resistance and agronomic characters. Available data on 194 apple cultivars, which were observed continuously over eleven years, showed that approx equal to 10% of them exhibited practical resistance to fruit scab (Venturia inaequalis) and 4% exhibited resistance to powdery mildew (Podosphaera leucotricha) on leaves and shoots. The results showed that reliable field screening for disease resistance required a period of at least ten years after grafting. The better performing cultivars were reintroduced into the nursery trade and 9 apple cultivars were sold to home growers or planted by professional growers in Belgium. The results are presented of the initial phase of a breeding programme to produce apple cultivars with durable resistance to disease derived from selected old cultivars.
