Abstract To have a better understanding of the energy needed to mill biomasses for biorefinery and bioenergy plants, we assessed the energy consumption of milling biomass (spruce, oak and miscanthus) with two different type of mills (hammer and knife mill) and the grindability of these biomasses by the Von Rittinger equation. The energy consumption of milling highly depends on the type of mill, water content and particle size (difference of the particle size between before and after milling) of the biomass, and the type of biomass. The energy consumption of milling is higher for the hammer mill compared to the knife mill. The Von Rittinger grindability factor values showed that the recalcitrance of biomasses to be milled is in increasing order : bamboo, oak and spruce.
