Abstract After two years of activities, the project is progressing as planned, with all deliverables met. Since all Cff findings to date have been in Phaseolus vulgaris, and because it is the only tested legume species to exhibit clear symptoms after artificial infection in the greenhouse, the remainder of the project will mainly focus on Phaseolus, both for surveying and for screening cultivars for resistance/tolerance to Cff. Among the different inoculation methods tested, pinpricking is preferred, as this gives the most consistent symptoms. The field experiment with naturally contaminated seeds demonstrated that seed-to-plant and subsequent plant-to-seed transmission is possible, although rather limited under Belgian conditions. The protocols established and validated for molecular detection in seed extracts are recommended to be used alongside the traditional plating method, as this will facilitate the testing of large numbers of samples.
