Abstract Observations conducted in Belgium in 1991 showed that barley yellow mosaic bymovirus became rare on winter barley due to the use of resistant cultivars. Barley yellow dwarf luteovirus (BYDV) was not severe even in fields without aphid control. Powdery mildew (Erysiphe graminis) and dwarf rust (Puccinia hordei) were not found on barley. Scald (Rhynchosporium secalis) and net blotch (Drechslera teres [Pyrenophora teres]) were controlled by fungicides. Foot rots appeared late in the season. Typhula incarnata attacked 20% of tillers without affecting yield. Barley yield was significantly reduced by severe frost in Feb. and late frost in spring. In winter wheat, BYDV was scarce in 1991. Yellow rust (P. striiformis) and brown rust (P. recondita) were not found. Some varieties were attacked by powdery mildew and Septoria tritici [Mycosphaerella graminicola] leaf blotch. Eyespot (Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides) was highly virulent in crops sown in Oct. and moderately virulent in crops sown in Nov. However, no relationship was found between eyespot and yield. Head blight (Fusarium sp.) was widespread, compared with glume blotch (S. nodorum [Leptosphaeria nodorum]). Causes of low incidence of rusts on cereals are discussed.
