Abstract It is well documented that plant protection products (PPPs) can lead to harmful effects on human health and the environment, guiding the implementation of regulatory policies, especially in the European Union (EU). The Sustainable Use of pesticides Directive (SUD) sets objectives for Member States regarding the reduction and monitoring of pesticide risks. To support this, the EU has developed two Harmonized Risk Indicators (HRIs). However, these indicators are biased, and consequently some Member States have created their own tools for assessing risk more accurately. Our work performs a critical overview of risk indicators used within Member States’ regulatory framework and investigates their suitability in the context of the SUD. The bibliographic research reveals that the Environmental Impact Quotient (EIQ) and the Pesticide Load (PL) are the most appropriate indicators for this context due to their moderate complexity and accessibility. Emphasis must be placed on the importance of joint development suitable for all stakeholders in order to achieve the goals of the SUD for reducing negative impacts of PPPs.
