| Abstract | The Gembloux Phytopathological Station has collected old Belgian varieties of fruit trees since 1975, with a view to evaluating and utilizing any genetic resistance to diseases present in them. At present the collection holds nearly 2500 accessions, 1200 of which are apple varieties. Following evaluation, varieties are distributed to amateur growers on the basis of organoleptic quality of the fruit, regularity of production, tree vigour on M9 rootstock, keeping quality and disease resistance. These recommended varieties are known as RGF (ressources genetiques fruitieres) varieties, and the principal characteristics are given of some of the most popular, including La Paix, Reinette de Blenheim, Cwastresse Double and Joseph Musch. |
