Abstract Barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) is distributed worldwide and infects most cereals and wild grasses. In Belgium, BYDV is detected in maize, considered as a summer host, and the virus is sometimes present, not every year, in early sown winter barley. The main vector is Rhopalosiphum padi and among the different isolates, the PAV-like strain is the most prevalent as the most dangerous. A partial control may be achieved by the judicious use of insecticides sprays for aphid control, depending on a forecasting system to determine the optimal date of application. In Belgium, an insecticide treatment might be applied toward the end of October or the beginning November. For the moment, this forecasting system is based on counting and collecting aphids in the fields, transferring them to barley plantlets in the lab for one week and checking their viruliferous status by ELISA. To shorten this period, a simplified RT-PCR has been optimised and allows the detection of one infected aphid in a pool of 20 collected aphids. It is anticipated that the forecasting system might be improved to give an answer to the farmers in one or two days.
