Abstract The infectivity of barley yellow dwarf virus by alates of the aphid Rhopalosiphum padi collected from young winter barley seedlings in October 1983 in France was assessed in the laboratory. The results indicated that 50% of the captured R. padi were vectors of one or more strains of the virus. There was no relationship between fecundity of the aphids and their ability to convey the virus.
