Abstract A limited study of some isolates in Belgium showed a very wide range of incompatibility alleles, 13 of which were on locus A and 16 on locus B. Two alleles of incompatibility, 1 concerning factor A and the other factor B are common to both Belgian and Swiss isolates. Major differences between these isolates relate to their growth in vitro and to their respective behaviour in the country of origin in terms of host range, and climatic conditions favourable to their development. A test of virulence on winter barley indicated that the conditions required for infection differ among isolates.
