| Abstract | Results of cold room and field inoculations of winter barley cv. Franka with pairs of strs of T. incarnata, some of which had been characterized genetically, showed host reaction to vary according to which str. first occupied infection sites and to the capacity of one str. for competing with the other. This was linked with degree of compatibility between the strs and possibly to the presence of dominant genes. Incompatibility between strs or early infection by a non-aggressive str. led to an incompatible host-pathogen interaction; however, with full compatibility between strs and simultaneous infection, the host-pathogen interaction was compatible. Presence of a gene which suppressed aggressiveness such as gene fcb of type B17 was able only to reduce the infection level in such a case. It is hypothesized that reciprocal nuclear migration between compatible strs could prevent barley plants from being protected by the non-aggressive str. |
