Abstract For the development of biorefinery and bioenergy plants, a better understanding of the energy consumption to mill biomasses is needed. In this context, we assessed the energy consumption of milling biomass (sorghum and bamboo) with a knife mill and the grindability of these biomasses by the Von Rittinger equation. The energy consumption of milling highly depends on the water content and particle size (difference of the particle size between before and after milling) of the biomass, and the type of biomass. The recalcitrance of biomasses to be milled determined based on the Von Rittinger grindability factor is higher for bamboo compared to sorghum.
