Abstract On the basis of population samples of Acyrthosiphon dirhodum (Wlk.) (Metopolophium dirhodum), Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) and Macrosiphum avenae (F.) (Sitobion avenae) taken on winter wheat in Belgium in 1971-72, the results of which were subjected to statistical analysis, information is given on the degree of accuracy that can be expected from estimates of the size of cereal aphid populations based on samples of various sizes.
