Abstract Axillary buds were taken from young soil-grown plants and cultured on an induction agar medium containing various additives and either Murashige and Skoog (MS) macro- and microelements or a combination of Morel macroelements and Heller microelements (MH). Callus formation occurred on MS medium, giving rise to shoots only after further culturing, but shoots were formed directly on MH medium, the optimum growth substance concentrations being 2.5 x 10-6M kinetin + 6 x 10-7M GA. Explants were transferred to a multiplication medium and eventually to soil. It was desirable to avoid the formation of an intermediary callus as the plantlets derived from it might not be true to type.
