Abstract A 20 year old Prunus domestica tree growing in a private garden near Gembloux and showing early growth in spring and witches'-broom was suspected to be infected by phytoplasma. This has been confirmed by PCR using universal primers fU5/rU3. Further obtention of a specific amplification product with the group-specific primers pair ECA1/ECA2 identified this phytoplasma as ESFY (group 16Sr-X-b). To our knowledge, this is the first record of phytoplasmas in Prunus species in Belgium.
