Titre NIR Hyperspectral Imaging and chemometrics as a lab tool for the quality control of agricultural products
Contenu The quality of agricultural and food products can be affected by numerous factors through all stages of production, processing and distribution, among others infestation by insects, presence of botanical contaminants in cereals or presence of animal proteins in feed. In the food sector, certain criteria of quality are visual as the shape, the colour or the absence of exterior damages. Other criteria can be determined only by analyzing the internal part of the food product as the damages by larvae, the pollution by some toxins (mycotoxins), etc ? Since 2000, the Walloon Agricultural Research Centre (CRA-W) has acquired expertise in the development of analytical methods based on NIR hyperspectral imaging using a plane scan hyperspectral NIR imaging system (MatrixNIR® Chemical Imaging System - Malvern instruments Ltd). Since 2010, CRA-W adapted analytical methods using a line scan hyperspectral NIR imaging system. This poster gives an overview of the research carried out by the CRA-W during the last months through several European projects and collaborations. In the SAFEED-PAP project (http://safeedpap.feedsafety.org/ ) NIR hyperspectral imaging was studied for the species-specific quantitative identification of animal particles. In the CONffIDENCE project (http://www.conffidence.eu ), the potential of the NIR hyperspectral imaging was investigated for the detection and quantification of ergot in cereals. In the collaboration with SESVANDERHAVE Company, the purpose of the study was to assess how NIR hyperspectral imaging spectroscopy can help the seed control in sugar beet seed factory and the diseases control in the breeding process. The different studies that have been performed until now allowed demonstrating the promising perspectives of the utilization of line scan near infrared hyperspectral imaging for the quality control of agricultural and food products.
