Abstract During 1991-92, varietal resistance of 24 barley cultivars was assessed on a 1-10 visual scale in Belgium. Based on the field results, multiple allelism was revealed in the F1 generation from crosses of barley cultivars carrying the allele ym1 for double resistance to barley yellow mosaic bymovirus (BaYMV) and barley mild mosaic bymovirus (BaMMV) and allele ym2 controlling resistance to strain BaYMV-Y2. Using traditional selection methods, >97% of F6 lines resistant to BaYMV and BaMMV were obtained at the Plant Breeding Station in Gembloux, Belgium.
